This panel brings together design practitioners and researchers to share their insights on varied aspects of Goa’s traditional salt-making practices, and their place in a profusely evolving Goa. The discussion examines challenges faced by local salt farmers — with irregular rains, a warming climate, inadvertent urban growth and disadvantageous market dynamics. The conversation intends to highlight grounds for revival through calling attention to the ecological and cultural facets of saltmaking traditions in Goa, and the heritage of artisanal craftsmanship these traditions reflect. Panelists discuss possible futures that include offering conducive support to salt farmers to adapt to a changing climate, and building tangible and intangible resources for a future imbued with opportunity and resilience.
