O Gaanewali brings together forms like thumri, dadra, ghazal, chaiti, jhoola, and hori to bring attention to female performers, especially Tawaifs, whose contributions to the evolution of these genres have been historically overlooked.
The show opened virtually at Harkat Studio’s Virtual Interactive Stage amidst the pandemic in January 2021. Following this, O Gaanewali premiered live at the NCPA Experimental Theatre in March 2022, to a houseful audience, followed by over 35 shows across Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Rajkot, Nagpur, Belgaum and Bangalore, including prestigious festivals like Jashn-e-Rekhta, Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, Vidarbha Lit Fest, SaptaSangeeti and venues like the BIC, MAP (Museum of Art and Photography) in Bangalore, NMACC, Soho House, The Royal Opera House and Prithvi Theatre in Mumbai.
