Bhav Prem Ras: The Garland of Baul Songs

curator

  • Geeta Chandran

Influenced by Vaishnava bhakti, Buddhism, Nath yogic traditions, and Islamic spiritual traditions, Baul music is a school of spirituality originating from the Bengal region.

In this performance, Parvathy Baul, practitioner, performer, and teacher of the Baul tradition brings to her audience a compilation of devotional songs from this school of music.

Recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi award, and Lalon Smarak Samman, Parvathy Baul inherited the tradition from two of Baul Gurus of the previous generation, Sri Sanatan Das Thakur Baul and Sri Shashanko Goshai. Over the last 30 years, she has travelled across the globe both in search for Baul songs and its practice, and to spread the wisdom of the Baul tradition through scores of performances.
